Kraft Pulp Mills utilize a closed loop chemical process to produce pulp from wood chips. One component of the process is green liquor, a combination of recovery boiler smelt and weak wash (dilute white liquor). The green liquor is clarified to remove some insoluble materials and then regenerated into white liquor in a process known as re-causticizing. Re-causticizing is a two-stage chemical process in which the green liquor is mixed and reacted with lime. The first stage reaction occurs in an agitated vessel known as a Slaker at high temperatures and violent agitation. The remaining chemical reaction occurs in a series of agitation tanks known as "Causticizers".
