Article: Pre-Krete Controls Corrosion In Power Generating Infrastructure Of Pulp & Paper Mills

Pulp & paper mills consume substantial amounts of energy in the form of electricity and steam. This demand exceeds 12% of the total US manufacturing energy. In many cases, it is cost effective for a mill to incorporate its own power generating station.

Traditionally, power generating facilities burn coal, oil, and/or gas. Pulp and paper facilities may burn other combustible fuels such as wood, waste oil, and other waste products.

Combustion of these fuels produces a corrosive gas stream. The byproducts of combustion combine with atmospheric moisture (H2O) to form corrosive gases. Specific to coal and oil, SO2 and SO3 combine with H2O to form H2SO4 or Sulfuric Acid.

In order to comply with environmental regulations, removal of the Sulfuric Acid and other pollutants (corrosives) is required. These systems are known as Flue Gas De-Sulfurization Systems or FGD Systems. Dependent on the alternate fuels being burned, other corrosives may form as well. Pre-Krete G-8 is used to protect numerous structures within these systems including stacks, scrubbers, scrubber towers, breechings, precipitators, and ductwork.
