Amontons I is a classic, horizontal plane friction instrument
Amontons I is a classic, horizontal plane friction instrument. There is a movable horizontal table, and a fixed sled. One test piece is associated with the table, another with the sled. Force sufficient to initiate sliding between the two test pieces is gradually applied at the table.

It is in the implementation of this concept that Amontons I is unique. It is designed specifically to comply with ISO 15359.

Setup couldn't be easier; simply place two pieces of paper of any reasonable size on the table. Initiate the test by starting to lower the arm that carries the sled. The instrument takes over, placing the sled on the table, applying the friction force, and capturing the maximum value. COF is reported digitally in the display unit.

A set of six replications takes less than 5 minutes, and the coefficient of variance is typically in the range of 1 to 3 percent. Life doesn't get any better than that!

Calibration? At the completion of each test the instrument automatically displays its "zero" and "shunt calibration" value. That's the operator's opportunity to confirm that the instrument is in calibration, or to make an adjustment.

Options? Amontons I can be integrated into a mill-wide data collection system via RS-232 or RS-485 interfaces. In that instance, calibration is entirely automatic.
