GEO Specialty Chemicals has started up a coating additive technical center to support the needs of the coated paper and paperboard market. The 10,000 ft2 facility is designed to provide state-of-the art coating technical support to GEO's coating additive customers.

GEO's coating technical support begins with high speed, pilot scale coating, which is complemented by all of the testing capabilities typical to paper mills that make coated paper and paperboard. Pilot coating utilizes a CLC 6000, Cylindrical Laboratory Coater, capable of coating with either the traditional applicator pond or a short-dwell type of applicator.

Sheet gloss development is achieved with a three-roll Beloit laboratory supercalender that can also be converted into a machine calender for enhancing the surface smoothness of uncoated, surface-sized papers. The coating colors for testing are made-down in a separate laboratory containing high speed dispersing capability as well as an automated starch cooker. The viscoelastic character of test coatings are characterized through the use of Brookfield and Hercules viscometers. The necessary test instrumentation for identification of coated paper optical properties is available. These instruments provide the necessary information identifying coated sheet brightness, opacity, gloss, and smoothness. Finished sheet printability can be evaluated with a KRK universal printability tester.
