Doosan Škoda Power Successfully Commissions 270 MW Steam Turbine At Kemi Mill

Enhancing Efficiency and Sustainability in Pulp Production

Doosan Škoda Power, a leading global power plant technology provider, has successfully commissioned a state-of-the-art 270 MW steam turbine at Metsä Fibre Kemi Bioproduct Mill in Finland. This milestone achievement marks a significant step towards enhancing efficiency and sustainability in the pulp production industry.

The commissioning of the steam turbine at the Kemi Bioproduct Mill is a joint effort by Doosan Škoda Power and Metsä Fibre, a leading European producer of pulp and paper products. The mill in Kemi is an advanced bioproduct mill that utilizes cutting-edge technology to produce high-quality pulp from sustainably sourced wood. Doosan Škoda Power's steam turbine, which boasts advanced engineering and innovative features, is designed to maximize energy efficiency and minimize environmental impact. The turbine's integration into the Kemi Bioproduct Mill will further optimize the process, allowing for more efficient power generation and utilization of resources. Doosan Škoda Power achieved all milestones as per the contractual conditions, demonstrating its commitment to delivering high-quality, reliable solutions within the agreed timeline.

Metsä Fibre‘s Kemi Bioproduct Mill is a significant investment by Metsä Group, aiming to revolutionize the pulp production industry's environmental footprint. The mill will produce some 1.5 million tonnes of softwood and hardwood pulp per year, as well as many other bioproducts. Additionally, it will produce 2.0 TWh of renewable electricity per year, which equals roughly 2.5 percent of Finnish total electricity production. By replacing fossil fuels with renewable bioenergy, the mill significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and contributes to the transition towards a carbon-neutral future.

The commissioning of the steam turbine in Kemi is a crucial step in realizing this vision. The turbine's advanced capabilities, coupled with the mill's innovative production processes, will contribute to the overall efficiency and sustainability of the facility.

„We are pleased to announce that we have successfully met all contractual milestones and completed the project, overcoming various obstacles and navigating through COVID-19 restrictions. This accomplishment underscores our team's resilience and unwavering dedication to delivering results, even in challenging circumstances,“ said Jindřich Závodný, project manager at Doosan Škoda Power

Metsä Fibre's decision to partner with Doosan Škoda Power for this project was based on the company's renowned expertise in power plant technology and commitment to sustainability. Doosan Škoda Power's extensive experience in delivering reliable and efficient steam turbines made them the ideal collaborator for this venture. The successful commissioning of the steam turbine at the Kemi Mill not only strengthens the partnership between Doosan Škoda Power and Metsä Fibre but also sets an example for sustainable development within the pulp production industry. The collaboration showcases the potential for integrating advanced power plant technology into industrial processes to achieve both economic and environmental gains. Doosan Škoda Power and Metsä Fibre are proud to be at the forefront of this transformative project, which demonstrates the industry's commitment to sustainability and responsible manufacturing practices. The commissioning of the steam turbine at the Kemi Mill represents a significant milestone in the journey towards a greener future for the pulp production industry.
