U.S. chemical pulp mills typically use landfills for disposal of their lime slaker grits
Waterlink/Hycor & Waterlink/Nordic Water Productsical pulp mills typically use landfills for disposal of their lime slaker grits. One New England integrated mill needed to meet new landfill regulations which categorized any material with a pH over 12.5 as hazardous waste. The high pH of the leachate and wet consistency of the lime slaker grits prompted the mill to search for a system to meet the new regulations and improve their grits handling operation.
The Hycor Separator not only helped the mill meet regulations but saved money besides. The Separator washed away the residual reactive lime and reduced volume as well. The washed grits were in a pH range of 10-11 and easily met the Paint Filter Test. The Gritmeister separator consistently washed the grits to an acceptable pH level and removed free liquid so the grits could pass the Paint Filter Test.
The used washwater, decanted from the Gritmeister, was extremely alkaline and was used to neutralize effluent in the pulp mill acid sewer which reduced the fresh lime requirements.
