Managing Sustainable Development

chart

Torraspapel, part of the Lecta group, has an environmental policy to manage paper mill waste which consists of reducing waste generated by controlling material, recycling and improving manufacturing processes.

The implementation of Environmental Management Systems and the attainment of the ISO 14001 certification at our paper mills requires us to have the different waste products we generate segregated, classified and evaluated by administrators and carriers authorized by the respective autonomous governments.

There are containers, compactors, etc. where waste is collected separately at all of Torraspapel's paper mills and centres. It is classified according to whether it is oil, batteries, office material, electronic material, paper, plastic, scrap, sawdust, sludge, trash, etc.

Torraspapel recycled at total of over 13,000 tons of solid waste in 2004. Industrial waste and sludge from purifiers are treated in legal dumps and subjected to strict control. The rest of the waste is completely recycled.

The evaluation of sludge as compost or its use in ceramic and cement plants is in an advanced testing phase as a possible solution in order to substitute the waste disposal site in the future.

Waste management, segregation and evaluation constitute a great effort that Torraspapel considers necessary to guarantee and promote an environmentally sustainable production model.
