Phosphoric Acid

Commercial markets for phosphoric acid are broadly divided into two categories:

• Agricultural
• Industrial

There are three types of phosphoric acid classified by different manufacturing processes:

• Wet-Process Phosphoric Acid (WPPA):
  Acid produced by treating phosphate rocks with a strong mineral acid.
• Thermal-Process Phosphoric Acid (TPPA):
  Acid produced by burning elemental phosphorus followed by hydration.
• Purified Wet-Process Phosphoric Acid: (PWPA):
  Acid produced by upgrading wet-process acid through solvent extraction.

Based on purity, there are more than five grades of phosphoric acid available on the market today:

• Food Grade
• Technical Grade
• Industrial Grade (Purified Green Acid)
• Feed Grade
• Fertilizer Grade

Users should investigate the proper grade of phosphoric acid for their particular application.
