The Raisio Group is a Finnish enterprise operating in the margarine, grain and chemical industries. The Raisio Group places a considerable emphasis on research and development, which has resulted in remarkable products such as Benecol plant stanol ester, an ingredient that lowers serum cholesterol levels.

The Raisio Group was established in 1939 by Finnish farmers. The first production unit was a flour mill, but over the years the company has expanded into many areas of arable product processing, and can claim top know-how in the field. The headquarters of the Raisio Group are in Raisio, southwest Finland.

The Group employs almost 2900 people. Of those, about 40 per cent are based outside Finland. Raisio has production units at over 40 locations in 17 countries. Group turnover for January-August 1999 was FIM 3,049 million (FIM 4,950 million in 1998). This is nine per cent less than in 1998, mainly because exports to Russia dried up. Profit before extraordinary items came to FIM 86 million, less than half of the corresponding 1998 figure.

The parent company, Raisio Group plc, has been listed on Helsinki Exchanges since 1989, The company has more than 23,000 shareholders and over 50% of shares are owned by international institutional investors and funds.

The Raisio Group exports margarines, malt products, wheat flour, pastas, cereal flakes, potato products, cat and dog food, feeds for fur animals and farm feeds. The Chemical Division is Raisio's most international division, with production plants in 15 countries. It is a specialist supplier to the pulp and paper industry throughout the world. The exceptionally wide product range includes chemicals and equipments extending from pulp making to the manufacture, coating, conversion and recycling of paper.
