The Auramo Spy is a small, lightweight device that measures the intensity of paper-roll handling, such as roll orientation, heat changes, bumps, and other planned or unplanned accelerations or events that might cause paper-roll damage during the various stages of handling and storage. The Spy consists of logging and carrier units, including a battery compartment. The unit itself fits inconspicuously into a 3-in. (76-mm) paper-roll core.

Configuration and data analysis are carried out using the Spy terminal unit and the spy data analysis software.

When the paper roll reaches its final destination, the Spy is easily removed from the paper-roll core, the logging unit is detached from the carrier unit, and the memory is downloaded into a portable PC. Depending on the capacity of the battery pack, the Spy stays functional for 12 to 24 months. Maximum storage capacity of the standard Spy SPM-1 is approximately 1,000 acceleration samples, 2,700 temperature and battery-voltage samples, and 2,000 roll-orientation samples. For larger storage capacity, an extended memory model Spy SPM-4 is available.
