Stora Celbi Installing New ECF/TCF Bleach Plant at Mill in Portugal

Stora Celbi, Celulose Beira Industrial SA, part of the Stora Enso Group, is replacing the filter-based bleach plant at its market pulp mill in Figueira da Foz, Portugal. The major modernization and expansion project is designed to reduce environmental impact and increase output capacity.

The new bleach plant, being supplied by Sunds Defibrator, part of the Rauma Group of Finland, is valued at about $13 million. It is designed for approximately 1,000 airdry m.t./day of fully bleached, kraft eucalyptus pulp, and includes a bleaching sequence allowing for both elemental chlorine free (ECF) and totally chlorine free (TCF) pulp production.

The bleach plant is based on the use of Sunds Defibrator's TwinRoll presses, which will reduce effluent volumes with optimum washing, reduce chemical consumption, and improve the environmental impact of the plant.

The mill's order covers two TwinRoll DPB and two TwinRoll DWA presses, tanks, piping, instrumentation, installation, training and startup supervision. The TwinRoll units will be manufactured at Sunds Defibrator's plant in Sundsvall, Sweden. Other equipment will be outsourced, mainly in Finland and Sweden.

Startup of the bleach plant is scheduled for September.
