Surface & Sizing Tester
- quick and precise measurements
- indices denoting sizing degree and surface properties
- detection of quality differences in materials with identical Cobb/HST values
- determination of liquid absorption dynamics in milliseconds
With a measuring device the dry paper sample is immersed into a test cell which is filled with a test liquid. In the test cell, an ultrasonic transmitter is arranged opposite a receiver. As soon as the sample is in contact with the test liquid, measurement is started within a few milliseconds. The ultrasonic signal is transmitter through the sample and reflected, scattered and absorbed during the penetration process. The resulting signal change if recorded on-line at the receiver. From the obtained curve, indices of sizing degree and surface properties are calculated and displayed on the screen. The water absorption rate is displayed as the A-value measured with a penetration time 0.5, 2, 5, 10, 30, or 60 seconds; A30 and A60 correlate to Cobb 30/60. The surface sizing and wettability is characterized with the S-value which describes the hydrophobicity of the surface. The W-value characterizes the surface porosity and roughness.
