When James W. Sewall Company was founded in 1880, our surveyors' primary assignments were to establish property boundaries and perform woodlands surveys for paper companies. Since that time, the need for accurate survey measurements has expanded greatly, and standard surveying tools, the compass and tape, have been enhanced with computers and satellite-derived Global Positioning Systems (GPS) technology. James W. Sewall, Sr., founder, would be amazed to see what "heights" surveying has reached.

These modern tools are now used by Sewall to serve a diverse group of customers. For municipal clients, we establish photogrammetric control and monumentation in preparation of detailed mapping projects. Our engineering-related services have involved topographic surveys and ALTA/ACSM as-built surveys, as well as construction layout and site plans. For property owner surveys, we perform boundary establishment, monumentation, and deed research. Sewall maintains an extensive archive of original survey information that predates the company. Much of this information is not available from any other source.

Sewall has assisted utility companies with right-of-way locating, design, and automated facilities data compilation. With the advent of GPS technology and digital data collection techniques, surveying has become a fast channel for transmitting critical information from the field to office-based Automated Mapping / Facilities Management and Geographic Information Systems (AM/FM/GIS).

Before starting any project, Sewall works with each client to determine how we can tailor our surveying resources to meet the needs at hand. We provide staffing and equipment necessary to meet our customers' goals, and work together with each client to define project scope and quality acceptance standards. Field crews can be mobilized to accommodate any project.

Sewall's surveying professionals are backed by a staff of engineers, photogrammetrists, cartographers, and AM/FM/GIS specialists. Our surveyors are committed to employing new technology in their operations, while at the same time upholding the high Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA/QC) standards set forth by our clients. Additionally, our surveyors are trained and certified through OSHA programs to operate in a variety of environmental situations and conditions.

While today's surveys are performed with much different technology and equipment, they are still accomplished in the same manner as they were by James W. Sewall, Sr. himself, through diligent research and accurate field work. These high standards have been the mainstay of our company, and are reflected in customer confidence that spans 116 years.
