TAPPISAFE Contractor Safety Training And Orientation Program Launched
Atlanta, GA - TAPPISAFE, a new Safety Orientation and Verification Program, has been recently launched to provide industry-wide training services for the pulp and paper industry. This safety training program is reciprocal orientation for mill contractors that provides more standardized safety training and cost reductions for participating mills. TAPPISAFE program content has been developed specifically for the pulp and paper industry by an Advisory Group with representatives from the leading pulp and paper mills, suppliers and associations including: AkzoNobel-Eka Chemicals, Association of Suppliers to the Paper Industry (ASPI), Coldwater Group, Finch, International Paper, Pulp & Paper Safety Association (PPSA), Kimberly-Clark, MWV, NewPage, RockTenn, TAPPI and Weyerhaeuser.
"This proven safety training course is a key resource that will assist the pulp and paper industry in continuing to improve safety for everyone at its facilities," notes Eric Fletty, TAPPI Vice President, Operations. "The program will provide an efficient, cost effective method for industry contractors to obtain safety training that ensures a standard level of safety awareness has been reached before a contractor goes to a jobsite."
The TAPPISAFE program provides a solid foundation in safety by addressing general safety needs for any contractor that works in a pulp and paper facility. Mills that participate in the TAPPISAFE Network can lower contractor training costs, save staff time, and improve their contractor training program with this Industry Approved safety program. The TAPPISAFE program can also help reduce OSHA non-compliance, injury-related costs and provide a complete audit trail. Training may be verified by owners and contractors by accessing a secure, online database. It features an instant verification process with site badges to identify TAPPISAFE compliant contractors. Similar programs have a proven track record of reducing accident incidents in other industries such as the petrochemical and utility industries.
TAPPISAFE is a web-based program that includes 2-1/2 hours of training and covers 19 key safety topics. A partial list includes: hazard communications, personal protective equipment, hearing conservation, elevated work platforms, basic electrical work practices, material handling, hand powered tools, vehicle safety and confined space.
